What expertise and background do you bring to the table?
I started my career working on site with various trades, primarily of an MEP background before deciding to become a Quantity Surveyor. Since then, I’ve completed a degree apprenticeship at the University of Greenwich and become a member of the RICS. I’ve worked predominantly on new-build residential, co-living and PBSA projects but have also worked in various other sectors such as education, hotels and leisure, often in listed buildings within central London. Having managed projects through feasibility, procurement, completion and disputes, I have a keen eye for detail and enjoy adding value to projects early on.
Can you outline the responsibilities of your role?
Pre contract, I’m responsible for establishing the clients cost plan, managing and reporting on any movements, risks and opportunities. Key to this process is understanding the clients’ aspirations, project design constraints, construction methodologies and the supply chain. Through procurement I advise on tendering and procurement strategies to agree a route to contract that aligns with the clients’ key drivers and contractor appetite. Post contract, I oversee monthly valuations and cost reports, ensuring clients are aware of the financial status of the project and aware of any potential risks or key decisions required. As with pre-contract stages, engagement with all project stakeholders, including the contractor, is key in ensuring advice is timely and fully informed throughout the contract.
Describe your experiences and growth at Circle?
Since joining Circle, I’ve been introduced to a verity of projects from new build PBSA in Edinburgh to private school refurbishments in London, which will give me a broad range of experience. I’m excited to be part of the team and be more involved in projects in an Employers Agent capacity.
What has been your favourite project?
My favourite project so far has been Shore station, Edinburgh. The project is a mixed-use development consisting of 604 student beds, 18 homes, commercial space and amenity across seven blocks. The site is a conservation area with some listed blocks retained for the development which will require specialist conservation works and provide a range of experience.
What brings you joy outside of work?
Outside of work, I’m usually watching the football, spending time with the family or catching up with friends at the pub. I enjoy fitness and training so try to get to the gym as often as I can. When the English weather permits, I can be found making holes in a golf course while trying to perfect my swing! I also love getting away to see new places, from cities breaks to beach holidays, I’m always looking for another place to add to the list.

After completing my studies in Civil Engineering, I embarked on my career in the construction industry. I started by taking on various delivery roles with a Tier 1 Contractor, where I gained valuable experience across a range of sectors including Build-to-Rent and Prime Residential, Leisure, and Defence. During my time with the contractor, I had the opportunity to work as a Structural Design Engineer and even had the chance to work on projects in the Middle East, broadening my experience further.
The diverse projects I’ve been involved in have given me a well-rounded expertise in various aspects of built environment projects, including the technical, commercial, and delivery aspects.
In my role, I have the responsibility of overseeing several key departments within our company, including Project Management, Clerk of Works, and Quality Management. I actively participate in project oversight, offering support to our project teams to ensure that our projects are successful. This often involves attending design meetings and conducting regular site visits to monitor progress and quality.
I play a crucial role in the strategic planning of our projects and our efforts in securing new projects, ensuring our company continues to thrive in the industry.
I initially joined Circle during the company’s early days as a Project Manager. Over time, I worked towards becoming a Chartered Engineer and have since progressed to the position of Director. Throughout my time at the company, I’ve had the privilege of working on a diverse range of projects. These include residential schemes like Taberner House and Abbey Place, as well as commercial office fit-outs and the restoration of Listed Buildings.
I have enjoyed the experience of working on the Mountbatten House office refurbishment project, due to its unique construction and the sheer scale of the site. Working on listed buildings like Mountbatten House can be challenging, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. There’s a sense of gratification that comes from being involved in a project from its initial conception all the way through to its successful completion.
As a proud Welshman, it will come as no surprise that I am an avid rugby fan. While my playing days are behind me, my involvement with the sport is now limited to watching from the comfort of the sofa or chasing my son around at Rugby Tots. The rest of my free time is usually spent renovating houses and getting involved in anything construction-related projects. It’s a passion that extends beyond my work and keeps me busy and engaged outside of the office.

My week typically includes a number of meetings, including internal catch-ups, design team meetings, and meetings with clients. I also have visits to the site between these meetings to walk through projects with contractors, designers, and clients. I recently started as an Assistant Project Manager. I have been welcomed into a friendly and great learning environment at Circle Development. I am currently working on two projects: Bristol Canon’s House, an office refurb project spanning over two large buildings with Heritage status, and Westminster Under School, a school expansion from an office building to a school building.
My favourite project is Westminster Under School. This project consists of a 1990’s office building conversion to a school. This comes with its own complex needs from planning and design aspects. Seeing the planning process and the first steps of the RIBA stages is completely new to me and requires me to read and learn every day. This project will be rewarding to see through all stages, and I will gain valuable knowledge for future use.
I enjoy playing football for my local ladies’ team. I train each week while also playing matches and tournaments most months. I am also a keen football supporter and attend matches as and when I can. Having originally graduated with an Economics and Finance Degree, I bring a strong analytical background. I joined the construction industry on a graduate scheme at a property developer, where I worked my way up through the ranks from graduate to Quantity Surveyor, whilst also completing my Master’s in Quantity Surveying and gaining my RICS accreditation.
I have gained valuable experience working on site on a mixture of high-end residential projects, shared ownership and fire remedial works, as well as delivering a luxury senior living scheme with all the resident’s facilities you can think of! I am detail-oriented and have developed my knowledge through managing various trade packages from temporary works to internal fit outs. I have been involved in both pre- and post-contract duties, particularly enjoying the pre-contract element, as I see it as an opportunity to set a project up for success.
Pre-contract, I am responsible for preparing cost plans and tracking cost movements as the design progresses, as well as highlighting risks and identifying opportunities to ensure clients are always fully informed throughout the process. As a project moves into the tendering and procurement phase, I advise on appropriate strategies to suit the client and achieve the best overall value.
Post-contract, I administer the contract and monitor costs against the budget. This includes carrying out monthly valuations, agreeing changes to the contract, tracking progress and reporting to clients.
I was initially attracted to Circle due to the variety of projects and the strong focus on carbon. It was clear from the start that everyone in the team is passionate about getting stuck into the detail and ensuring projects are delivered successfully. Furthermore, the importance placed on professional development is second to none, with frequent management catch ups, CPD sessions and goal setting. The annual ski trip was also a big selling point!
The term “simplifying complexity” resonates with me, as more often than not, the construction industry overcomplicates issues that can be resolved by stripping them back to basics and identifying a straightforward solution.
It is an exciting time to join Circle, given the rapid growth and strong pipeline of projects. I am looking forward to getting involved in a variety of schemes and further developing my knowledge. Circle’s Lifecycle Carbon Assessments are of particular interest to me; having written my Master’s dissertation on sustainability in procurement, I am keen to understand how I can positively influence carbon usage on projects. Additionally, the focus on carbon at Circle reflects the company’s commitment to leaving a lasting positive impact on construction projects and enabling clients to make fully informed decisions when considering the whole lifecycle of a scheme.
I spend most of my time outside of work in the gym or running, whether that be training for a CrossFit competition, Hyrox race or half marathon. While studying Civil Engineering at University, I began my career as a placement student site engineer for a Tier 1 Contractor. Working on a police training facility in Yorkshire, which included the construction of indoor ballistic fire-ranges. This initial experience kick-started my journey in the construction industry. Throughout my career, I’ve had the opportunity to work on a variety of projects, each with its own intricate design details. These projects have included a 35-storey residential tower, commercial factories spanning over 120 acres, secondary schools, and petrol filling stations located within residential developments. My work has taken me to various locations across the UK, and I’ve also gained valuable overseas experience in Qatar.
In my role as Associate Director, I’m responsible for overseeing part of the project delivery function within Circle, including Construction Contracts from RIBA Stage 3 through to RIBA Stage 6. This involves managing of a diverse number of individuals through varied communication methods, to align Consultants/Contractors in obtaining the Client’s brief. I set key project deliverables, manage project risks, and address critical issues to facilitate the success of collaborative schemes. I particularly enjoy my role during significant project milestones, such as successfully concluding tendering negotiations between a contractor and client, as well as issuing ‘Practical Completion’ certificates at the conclusion of construction projects.
I began my role as a Project Manager in 2019 at Circle. During my time here, I achieved my Civil Engineering Chartership with the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) in 2020. The invaluable support and technical knowledge shared by my colleagues during Continuing Professional Development (CPD) sessions played a crucial role in helping me attain my Chartership and advance into the role of Senior Project Manager.
My favourite project at Circle has been ‘The Fox.’ It was a significant opportunity for me to lead a construction project from cradle to grave. While the project presented its fair share of challenges, including a suspension due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it provided me with the chance to build relationships with both the client and contractor teams, which will last a lifetime. The project’s intricate design required me to utilise my on-site experience, which was instrumental in successfully delivering a traditional reinforced concrete frame building, hidden behind a locally listed historic pub and included facilities catered to both private and affordable housing residents. The project’s complexity and the teamwork involved made it a particularly rewarding experience.
I’m a keen sportsman, even though I might not excel in any particular sport, I enjoy the competitive element and camaraderie that sporting competition brings. In my free time, I like to use my holidays as an opportunity to explore countries all over the globe. The rest of my time is spent on my own construction project at my home in South London.
