Trehus, the pioneering timber-framed office building now progressing on-site in Maidenhead has reached a new milestone with a key sustainability upgrade to its façade.
The project team has opted for locally sourced Portland Stone from Albion Stone plc in Dorset, a decision that significantly reduces the building’s embodied carbon while enhancing its architectural character.
Natural stone offers major environmental benefits that deserve celebrating:
- It isn’t fired at high temperatures, resulting in over 75% less embodied carbon than traditional brick.
- By sourcing stone locally from within the UK, the team has achieved a 90% reduction in transport-related emissions compared to imported alternatives.
Part of a broader sustainability strategy
The project is being delivered by a team deeply aligned on this mission. Trehus is a development by Hub in partnership with Smedvig, designed by Waugh Thistleton Architects, built by Glencar as main contractor, and we at Circle Development are acting as Quantity Surveyor and Clerk of Works. Together, we’re creating a workplace that proves sustainability and quality can go hand-in-hand.
This façade update is just one part of a broader sustainability strategy. Trehus is designed to deliver a:
- 40% reduction in embodied carbon compared to a conventional concrete frame
- Net zero carbon target
- BREEAM Outstanding target
- Fitwel 3 Star accreditation
These targets reflect our core belief that the future of office development must be low-carbon, beautifully designed, and uncompromising on quality. Trehus stands as a bold statement and a new benchmark for low-carbon office development in the UK, proving that sustainability and design excellence can go hand-in-hand.
